BHPH
Buy Here Pay Here
Definition: A dealership business model where the dealer finances vehicle purchases in-house rather than using a bank or third-party lender — collecting weekly or bi-weekly payments directly from the buyer.
How BHPH works
In a standard dealer sale, a bank or finance company provides the loan and the buyer pays the lender monthly. In a Buy Here Pay Here operation, the dealer is the lender: they extend credit to the buyer, hold the vehicle title until the loan is paid, and collect payments — usually weekly or bi-weekly — directly at the lot or through a payment portal.
BHPH dealers typically serve buyers who cannot qualify for traditional financing: recent bankruptcies, no credit history, or damaged credit. These buyers have limited options and are willing to pay higher interest rates and accept shorter loan terms in exchange for access to a vehicle.
The economics of BHPH
BHPH operations are financially more complex than standard retail. The dealer's capital is tied up in both the vehicle inventory and the loan book. Default rates are typically higher than traditional auto loans. Collections and repo operations become part of the business.
When managed well, BHPH can be highly profitable — interest income adds significantly to front-end vehicle margin. When managed poorly, high defaults and repo costs can erode those gains quickly.
BHPH and dealer software
BHPH operations need specialized collections tracking that standard independent dealer DMS platforms may not fully support. Payment tracking, late payment management, and lien release workflows are BHPH-specific features that require dedicated software or add-on modules.
